The Department of Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese proudly announces that PhD candidate Rachel West has won one of this year's All-University Graduate Teaching Awards. As Rachel develops her expertise in twentieth-century transatlantic Iberian literatures, she has created a welcoming and inclusive classroom environment where all students are encouraged to learn.
The Department of Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese extends its sincere congratulations to the Class of 2020. At the BA,MA, and PhD levels, you have faced and overcome challenges inside and outside of the classroom. Especially now, in the time of Coronavirus, you are setting an example for all of us. Even though there is not an in-person graduation ceremony, you are still graduating and we are still celebrating!

The Department is proud to announce that the Giulliano Prize in Spanish was awarded to Javaria Abbasi and Katerina Silis was awarded the Virginia Louise Garth Scholarship
Congratulations to Jessica Marroquín for the publication of her podcast, "la Santa Muerte." The podcast, part of the Sacred and Profane series, was produced as part of the Race, Religion, and Democracy Lab at UVA. Research for the podcast came from Jessie's dissertation project, "Figures of Death: Hybridity and Violence in la Santa Muerte," which she defended earlier this semester.
Undergraduate student Will Norton, a 2020 graduate of the interdisciplinary program in linguistics and a collaborator of the UVA Multepal Project is part of the Class of 2020 profiles in UVA Today.
